Mao Zedong (1893-1976) was one of the most renowned public figures in China during the 20th century. He founded the Chinese Communist Party after the establishment of the role of the Red Army and the development of a defense base area in the early 1900s.
He was responsible for the many changes in China influencing the land reforms system, agricultural products, and distribution of medicinal products and services. He brought drastic changes and revolutionary developments through the campaigns.
In the 1960s Mao Zedong challenged many new forms of domination and subordinates’ approach to development challenging social and political differences. He also initiated the “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution” in 1966 which turned out to be successful in removing many policies forcing him to restore military order.
Mao until he died referred to the struggle between the people as the cultural revolution and such a revolution has caused serious harm to China. After his death, his leadership was highly debated in relation to the cultural revolution.
In 1981 a resolution by the Party Central Committee criticized the rule of Mao and determined his position as a great leader and as an ideologist of communism.
Mao Zedong Thought or Maoism
Maoism is a mix of Marxism and Leninism which was originally developed by Mao Zedong for realizing socialist reforms in the pre-industrial society of China and socialist revolution in agriculture. He developed Maoism in a way so that it can be applied globally.
Until Chinese economic reforms took place by Xiaoping, Maoism was the political and military ideology of the Communist Party of China and revolutionary movements.
In the 1970s a member of the communist party, Shining Path developed Maoism into Marxism-Leninism-Maoism so that the concept can be applied at a universal level.
Mao Zedong’s Intellectual Development as a Leader
Mao’s intellectual development has five major phases which can be divided into the following categories:-
- Initial Marxist Period (1920-1926)
- Formative Maoist Period (1927-1935)
- Mature Maoist Period (1935-1940)
- Civil War Period (1940-1949)
- Post 1949 following the revolutionary victory.
Initial Marxist Period
The transformation from capitalism to communism was done for many reasons apart from just education. Reasons were also rulers being overthrown by people, proletarians being disconted with the rise in demand of communism. Capitalists would not themselves transit towards communism by their own. There were also no socio economic explanations to it forming the base of Marxist ideology.
Formative Maoist Period
During this period a very limited amount of Marxist category of people was employed avoiding any other theoretical implications by Mao. Mao in the initial stage was concerned with knowledge, revolutionary ideology and counter-revolutionary conditions.
Mature Maoist Period
It was a golden time for Mao’s leadership. There were many public pamphlets saying ‘Strategic Problems of China’s Revolutionary War’ which promoted the revolutionary practice.
An application of the Marxist theory was required to divert it from the Soviet approach. It could not have been applied to China.
Civil War Period
During this time period, Mao focused more on the revolutionary practice and less on the Marxist theory which was a practice-oriented knowledge. Mao brought a correlation between the Marxist theory and Chinese practice.
His theory was mainly focused on dogmatism (excessive reliance on abstract theory) and empiricism (excessive dependence on the experience.
Post Civil War Period
Mao revised the theory to relate it to the practice of socialist construction. He talked about the contradiction between subjective thought and objective reality. He also added new elements into his understanding of the subject-object contradiction. He saw the contradiction as a universal principle underlying all processes of development and with each contradiction processed with its own particularity.
