MDSA30090 Disability UCD Assignment Example

Disability encompasses a wide range of physical and mental health conditions that may affect a person’s ability to do normal activities, such as walking, dressing, bathing, and working. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are about 1 billion people with disabilities worldwide.

Disabilities can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired during a person’s lifetime. They can be mild or severe, and they can vary from one day to the next. Many people with disabilities face challenges in their everyday lives, but with the right support, they can live full and productive lives.

Many organizations provide support to people with disabilities, including disability rights groups, special education schools, and programs, low-cost medical clinics, and support groups. Medical professionals, nurses, and other health professionals tend to be the people who routinely provide support for people with disabilities. They often share their own experiences and life lessons that helped them to get past difficulties.

A) Biomedical/Social Knowledge:

Assignment Task 1: Know the regional anatomy of the head, neck, and vertebral column.

The regional anatomy of the head, neck and vertebral column can be classified into five regions: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal.

The cervical region consists of seven vertebrae in the neck and is responsible for the movement of the head. The thoracic region is made up of twelve vertebrae and is responsible for the movement of the chest. The lumbar region consists of five vertebrae and is responsible for the movement of the lower back. The sacral region consists of five fused vertebrae and is responsible for the movement of the hips. Finally, the coccygeal region consists of four fused vertebrae and is responsible for the movement of the tailbone.

Assignment Task 2: Understand the anatomical relations of the structures that comprise the region.

The region in question is the pelvic floor. The structures that comprise the pelvic floor are:

  1. The pubic bone
  2. The ischial tuberosities
  3. The coccyx
  4. The obturator internus muscle
  5. The piriformis muscle
  6. The levator ani muscles (composed of the iliococcygeus, pubococcygeus, and coccygeus muscles)

These muscles and bones work together to create a sturdy foundation for other organs in the pelvic cavity such as the bladder, uterus, and rectum. They also help to control the movement and expulsion of waste.

Assignment Task 3: Describe the anatomical and pathophysiological principles underlying key, commonly encountered disabilities.

The key anatomical principle is that the endocrine pancreas is composed of two types of cells, alpha, and beta. The pathophysiological principle is that when someone has diabetes mellitus, their blood sugar levels are too high because their beta cells aren’t producing enough insulin (or they’re resistant to the effects of insulin).

There are two types of diabetes mellitus – type 1 and type 2. In type 1 diabetes, the person’s body doesn’t produce any insulin at all. In type 2 diabetes, the person’s body produces some insulin, but it’s not enough to keep their blood sugar levels under control. So people with type 2 diabetes have to take medication (usually pills) to help them regulate their blood sugar levels.

Although there are different forms and “extent” of this disease, some characteristics that hold across the board are:

The obesity epidemic has caused widespread changes in diet and physical activity in children. To note, because kids like to pretend they need fast food nearby they will either be studying or watching TV near the entrance (or as close as they can get to it at school, or may voluntarily study at or within 5 minutes of the nearest Taco Bell (when weight gain, low use of transportation and sedentary lifestyle makes school lots easier to walk or bike).

Assignment Task 4: Describe the issues associated with having a disability.

The issues associated with having a disability can vary greatly depending on the person’s situation. However, some of the most common challenges faced by people with disabilities include barriers to accessing education, employment, and health care; as well as social isolation and discrimination.

Additionally, people with disabilities often face significant financial burdens due to extra costs related to disability-related needs (such as assistive technology, transportation, and accommodations). And unfortunately, in many cases, these extra costs are not covered by insurance or other benefits programs.

All of these challenges can make it significantly harder for people with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in society. However, many organizations and groups offer support and resources for those who need them. And these organizations and groups have demonstrated that with compassion and a little hard work, persons with disabilities can achieve good health and personal satisfaction.

Assignment Task 5: Understand key concepts in disability and equality legislation.

Disability discrimination is the act of discriminating against a person because of their disability. This can be in the form of denying them access to education, employment, or public services.

There are three main pieces of legislation that protect disabled people from discrimination: The Equal Opportunities Act (2004), The Disability Discrimination Act (1995), and the Equality Act (2010). These acts make it illegal for employers to discriminate against employees who have a disability, for service providers to deny service to people with disabilities, and for schools to exclude students with disabilities.

It’s important to note that not all disabilities are visible, and so people with hidden disabilities are also protected by these acts. A hidden disability is a physical or mental impairment that is not immediately obvious and is often discovered when its effects become evident.

B) Clinical Assessment/Personal and Professional Development

Assignment Task 6: Critically evaluate a clinical case.

The patient has been diagnosed with type II diabetes. She is obese and has a family history of the condition. Her blood sugar levels are consistently high, and she has been prescribed medication to help manage her condition.

Despite taking her medication as prescribed, the patient’s blood sugar levels remain high. In addition, she reports feelings of fatigue and thirstiness, both of which may be symptoms of diabetes. A review of her dietary habits reveals that the patient is not following a healthy diet and is eating many processed foods and sugary snacks.

Based on this information, it is evident that the patient would benefit from making dietary changes to help manage her diabetes. She should aim to eat more whole foods and fewer processed foods.

Assignment Task 7: Apply knowledge of the anatomy of the region to clinical cases.

The human body is a complex system of systems, and clinicians must have a good understanding of the anatomy of the region that they’re treating. For example, to provide an accurate diagnosis, a clinician must be familiar with the different parts of the brain and their functions. By understanding how each part of the brain works, a clinician can better identify which regions are affected in cases of neurological disease.

Similarly, to treat patients effectively, clinicians must also be familiar with the anatomy of other regions of the body. For example, clinicians who specialize in treating pain must understand where various types of pain receptors are located to target them effectively. By understanding the anatomy of different regions of the body, physicians can make more informed decisions regarding a patient’s treatment.

Assignment Task 8: Describe case history and findings upon examination and research.

A 28-year-old female presented to the clinic with a 3-day history of fever, cough, and fatigue. She also reported that her skin had been feeling “tight” for approximately 2 weeks before presentation. On examination, she was noted to have a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, tachycardia (heart rate of 115 beats per minute), and diffuse erythema on her chest. A chest X-ray showed bilateral infiltrates suggestive of pneumonia.

Further investigation revealed that the patient was recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and had not been taking her insulin medication as prescribed. This led to a diagnosis of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition caused by a lack of insulin leading to an accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood.

Assignment Task 9: Demonstrate an ability to work as a team through a group project.

Working as a team is extremely important in the professional world. It’s essential to be able to communicate effectively with others, share tasks and responsibilities, and work towards a common goal. Through my experience working on group projects in college, I’ve learned how to effectively collaborate with others.

I’m patient and efficient when it comes to communicating with my team members. I’m always willing to lend a helping hand, and I make sure that all tasks are completed on time. I strive for excellence and always put the team first. I believe that my teamwork skills will be an asset to your company.

Assignment Task 10: Develop critical thinking and self-directed learning skills.

The best way to develop critical thinking and self-directed learning skills is to get started early in life. When young students are given opportunities to think for themselves and make decisions, they learn how to question their assumptions, evaluate evidence, and come to their conclusions. This type of independence and self-reliance is essential for lifelong learning.

One way to encourage this type of thinking is through student-led learning where students are responsible for their instruction. In this model, students select topics they are interested in, research the subject matter on their own, and then present their findings to the class. This approach allows students to take ownership of their learning and develop the skills they need to be successful learners.
