Reflective Essay on Learning Style, I am a Visual learner Essay Sample, Ireland

The way we learn information varies from person to person, but there are some commonalities. For example; according to Steve Hastings’ article in Business World “A persons learning style influences largely his work habits”, or how she processes new tasks at home – whether they need visual cues ( paintings)auditory ones( listening).

In general, people can be broadly classified into three types of learners – Visual, Auditory and Tactile. Each type of learner prefers a different method of taking in new information and processing it. And as Hastings points out, this learning style can have a big impact on work habits and productivity.

I am a visual learner. This means that I prefer to learn by seeing things, either through pictures or diagrams or by reading text. When I am given a new task at work, I need to see what it is I have to do in order to understand it properly. Once I have a clear picture in my head, I can then start working on it.

Visual learners often find it helpful to create mind maps or flow charts to organise their thoughts and ideas. This can be a useful way of seeing the big picture and understanding how all the different elements of a task fit together.

As a visual learner, I prefer to take in information through images and illustrations. Words are often secondary for me when trying to learn something new. This isn’t to say that I don’t understand or value the written word – I do – but rather that pictures are often worth more than a thousand words when it comes to my personal learning process.

There are several reasons why visual aids are so helpful for me.

  • First of all, they provide a concrete way of representing abstract concepts. When I am trying to learn something complicated, seeing it visually can really help me to wrap my head around it.
  • Secondly, visuals tend to be more engaging than words alone; they can help me to pay attention and focus on the task at hand.
  • Finally, visuals can often be more memorable than words, which is obviously a big plus when it comes to learning and retention.

There are lots of different ways to incorporate visuals into the learning process, and what works best for me might not work for everyone. However, some of the visual aids that have been most helpful for me include diagrams, charts, graphs, and infographics. I also find that mind maps can be really helpful in organizing information visually. Additionally, I often take my own notes using pictures and symbols instead of (or in addition to) words; this helps me to better remember what I’ve learned later on.

Of course, not every concept can be easily represented visually, and there are definitely some things that are better learned through reading or listening. However, I have found that incorporating visuals into my learning as much as possible has really helped me to succeed in school and in other areas of my life.

One downside of being a visual learner is that it can sometimes be difficult to learn new things if there is no visual aids available. For example, if I am trying to learn a new language, I will need to find a good textbook with plenty of pictures and diagrams to help me understand the grammar and vocabulary.

Another thing to bear in mind is that not all tasks can be learned by simply looking at them. Some tasks, such as playing a musical instrument, require practice and repetition in order to improve. However, once I have learnt the basics of a task, I find that I can often progress more quickly if I have a visual representation to refer to.

When teachers introduce new material, they typically just lecture. However, when they provide examples and write them out on the board, I can visualize it which helps the information stick better. When studying for a test, I often create my own diagrams or charts to help me remember the information. This has worked really well for me in the past.

I remember when I first learned  about the solar system in school. The teacher just talked about it and wrote some notes on the board, but I wasn’t really sure what she was talking about. However, when she showed us a picture of the solar system and pointed out where each planet was, I suddenly understood everything. Seeing it visually made all the difference for me.

Another time I learned something new by being a visual learner was the time I learned how to tie my shoes. My mom tried to teach me how to do it by telling me what to do, but I just couldn’t seem to get it. However, when she showed me how to do it step-by-step and I was able to see exactly what she was doing, it all clicked and I was able to tie my shoes on my own.

So, as you can see, visuals can be a really big help for me when it comes to learning new things. I find that they provide a concrete way of representing abstract concepts, that they are more engaging than words alone, and that they can often be more memorable than words.

I really like how visuals can help to make complex ideas more understandable. I also find that they help me to focus and pay attention when I am trying to learn something new. And finally, I think that visuals are often more memorable than words, which is obviously a big plus when it comes to learning and retention.

Sum Up:

Overall, being a visual learner has its advantages and disadvantages. However, I have found that understanding my learning style and using visuals to my advantage has really helped me to succeed both academically and in other areas of my life. I’ve found that visual aids are an extremely valuable tool in my learning process. By taking advantage of the way my brain works best, I’ve been able to learn more effectively and efficiently. If you’re a visual learner like me, I encourage you to experiment with different types of visuals and find what works best for you.
